A Mint and YNAB Alternative Without Bank Linking

Short answer: Mint shut down on March 23, 2024, and YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34-day trial. If you want to budget on Android without a bank connection, an account or a subscription, Balance is free with unlimited transactions (it shows ads; Premium is optional). If you want automatic bank imports, multi-device sync or YNAB's zero-based method, YNAB is still the stronger choice.

What happened to Mint

Intuit closed Mint on March 23, 2024 and pointed users to Credit Karma, which it also owns. Credit Karma doesn't offer Mint's budgeting tools, so many former Mint users went looking for a new budget app (CNBC). Mint was built around linking your bank accounts — so if the shutdown made you rethink handing a free service your bank access, you're not alone.

Switching from Mint or YNAB

  1. Keep your history. Export your YNAB data before you cancel, and hold on to any Mint export you saved. Balance can't import these files, but you'll still have your records.
  2. Add each account in Balance with today's balance.
  3. Recreate your categories and set a default monthly budget for each.
  4. Add recurring rules for rent, salary and subscriptions so they post automatically.
  5. Log daily spending as it happens — it takes seconds per purchase.
