An Offline Expense Tracker for Android — No Internet, No Account
Short answer: Balance is an Android expense tracker that works with no internet connection at all. There is no server, no sign-up and no bank connection — every account, transaction and budget is stored only on your phone, with optional backup to your own Google Drive.
What "offline" actually means in Balance
Plenty of apps call themselves offline because they cache data until the next sync. Balance is built the other way round: the phone is the only place your data lives.
- No backend. There is no Muffinly Labs server behind the app. Every screen reads and writes to a database on your device.
- No account. You open the app and start tracking. There's no email, password or login to create — and nothing to lose access to.
- No bank connection. Balance never asks for bank credentials and never pulls transactions from a bank. You log what you spend. (Here's why that matters.)
- No live exchange-rate feed. You enter rates yourself, so multi-currency tracking works on a plane too.
Everything that works in airplane mode
Switch your phone to airplane mode and all of this keeps working exactly the same:
- Logging expenses, income and transfers between your own accounts
- Accounts and net worth across Cash & Bank, Cards, Savings & Investments and Foreign Currency
- Monthly budgets with rollover, alert thresholds and a month-end pace projection
- Recurring rules for rent, salary and subscriptions — including catch-up if you haven't opened the app for weeks
- Reports with plain-language insights, trends and the calendar spending view
- Reminders and weekly or monthly summaries, scheduled locally on the device
- CSV export, home-screen widgets and app lock with your phone's biometrics
- 150+ currencies, with the exchange rate saved on every transaction
The few things that use a connection
Being honest about the exceptions is part of the point. A connection is only used when you opt into something that inherently needs one:
- Google Drive backup — off by default. When enabled, it writes a private snapshot to your own Drive's hidden app-data folder, never to our server.
- Buying Premium — handled by Google Play.
- Ads on the free tier — served by Google AdMob. Your financial data is never shared with it; see the privacy policy.
If you never turn on backup and stay on airplane mode, Balance keeps working indefinitely.
Who an offline expense tracker is for
- Privacy-minded people who don't want their spending history on anyone else's servers.
- Travellers logging spending abroad without roaming — see multi-currency tracking.
- Anyone with patchy signal, who wants to log a purchase at the till rather than later.
- People who've been burned by sync outages or an app shutting down and taking their data with it.
Questions
Does Balance need an internet connection?
No. Every account, transaction, budget, recurring rule and report is stored and calculated on your phone. A connection is only used for things you opt into: Google Drive backup, buying Premium, and loading ads on the free tier.
Where is my data stored if there is no server?
In a database on your device. If you turn on backup, a private snapshot also goes to the hidden app-data folder of your own Google Drive.
What happens to my data if I lose my phone?
Because data lives only on the device, it goes with the phone unless you have a backup. Turn on Google Drive backup (free, manual or automatic) or export CSV regularly, then restore on your new phone.
Is the offline version free?
Yes. The free version works fully offline with unlimited transactions, accounts and categories, and shows ads. Optional Premium removes ads and adds PDF report export. See the full FAQ for details.
