No bank login

A Budget App Without Bank Linking

Short answer: Balance is an Android budget app that never connects to your bank. You don't hand over credentials, create an account or sync to a server — you add your accounts, log what you spend, and Balance handles budgets, recurring bills, reports and net worth on your phone. The free version has unlimited transactions.

Why people skip bank linking

Linking a bank usually means giving a third-party aggregator ongoing access to your account and your full transaction history. That creates another copy of very revealing data, and it isn't always clear who holds it or for how long. We cover the details in why you shouldn't give budget apps your bank passwords.

Other reasons we hear often:

  • Your bank isn't supported — common outside the US and for smaller banks and credit unions.
  • Connections keep breaking, and a budget built on a feed that stops updating is worse than none.
  • Cash and informal money — cash wallets, money lent to family, a savings jar — never appear in a bank feed anyway.
  • You want to notice spending, not just review it after the fact.

How budgeting works with no bank connection

1. Add your accounts once

Create each account — bank, card, cash, savings, foreign currency — with today's balance. Balance groups them into account types and rolls them into one net worth figure.

2. Log spending in seconds

Pick expense, income or transfer, enter the amount, choose a category, done. Transfers between your own accounts never count as spending. The calendar view shows high-spend days at a glance.

3. Let recurring rules do the repetitive part

Rent, salary and subscriptions can post automatically on schedule, or remind you ahead of time instead. If you don't open the app for a few weeks, missed occurrences still post correctly on next launch.

4. Set budgets once, adjust per month

A default budget per category applies to every month; override just one month when you need to. You get a month-end pace projection based on your actual daily rate, optional rollover of unused budget, and an alert threshold per budget.

5. Check reports, not spreadsheets

Reports show category breakdowns and month-over-month trends, with plain-language insights such as your top category and largest single expense.

What you give up, honestly

Without a bank feed, nothing arrives automatically except your own recurring rules — if you don't log a purchase, Balance doesn't know about it. Balance also doesn't import bank statements. If you want transactions to appear by themselves, a bank-linked app is the better fit. If you'd rather keep your bank login to yourself, manual logging plus recurring rules covers most people's needs in a couple of minutes a day.

What to look for in any no-bank-link budget app

  • Where the data lives. "No bank linking" doesn't always mean "private" — some apps still store everything on their servers. Balance keeps it on your device, with optional backup to your own Google Drive.
  • Whether you need an account. Balance needs none.
  • Free-tier limits. Caps on accounts or transactions make manual budgeting painful. Balance's free version is unlimited (it shows ads).
  • Recurring transactions. They're what make manual budgeting sustainable. Free in Balance.
  • Export. Make sure you can take your data with you — Balance exports CSV for any date range.

Questions

Can I budget without linking my bank account?

Yes. You add accounts with their current balances and log transactions yourself. Budgets, recurring bills, reports and net worth all work from what you enter.

Isn't entering transactions by hand a lot of work?

Less than it sounds: a purchase takes a few seconds, and recurring rules add regular bills and income automatically. Many people find typing each expense makes them more aware of it.

Can Balance import my bank statements?

No. Balance doesn't connect to banks or import statements. You can export everything to CSV whenever you want.

Is Balance free?

Yes — unlimited transactions, accounts and categories, including budgets and recurring rules, with ads. Optional Premium removes ads and adds PDF report export. See the FAQ.
